Review of the Regulation of Waste Related Activities
The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) has advised that it has progressed its review of Waste Related Environmentally Relevant Activities (ERA) and has circulated a preliminary paper. EHP is now seeking general comments on the preliminary version of the draft framework. This feedback will be used to further refine the proposed framework prior to commencing the Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) stage of the review.
The purpose of the review has been to develop an ERA framework that better reflects current waste management practices and the environmental risks associated with each activity. The review has sought to identify opportunities for improved waste management and resource recovery, industry growth and, where appropriate, facilitate the use of new and innovative technologies.
Consultation on this project has been undertaken with government and industry and most recently a draft paper was released for public comment in August 2015. EHP received 17 submissions in response to the draft paper and this feedback has been used to further develop and refine the proposed waste related ERA framework.
EHP has advised that this is not the last opportunity to provide feedback. All stakeholders will have opportunity to provide further comments during the public consultation period of the RIS. However, the LGAQ would encourage you to use this opportunity to raise any issues with EHP prior to the public consultation phase.
