The Regional Events Strategy Group is made up of representatives from Councils in the FNQROC region with view to coordinating events which operate across different council boundaries.

Year 2013 has quite a line-up of exciting and varied events that will take place across multiple council areas.  As well as some of the more familiar events such as the Crocodile Trophy for mountain bikes which traversing Cairns Regional Council, Tablelands Regional Council and Cook Shire Council, this year will see some new and novel events.  'Cooktown and Down' is a jet-ski marathon from Cooktown to Townsville.  This is a Variety Club charity bash covering 600 kilometres in six days by sea, stopping off at Port Douglas, Cairns, Mission Beach and Hinchinbrook.

It is events such as these which interest the new Regional Events Strategy Group, which aims to ensure that Local Government involvement is coordinated to assist in getting the best possible outcome for the event and the region.

The Regional Events Strategy Group will not create another layer, but will work with existing organisations and structures. The main objectives are:

  • Share within the group information regarding regional events involving existing or potential cross boundary participation
  • Streamline Councils' (collective) involvement or otherwise for a cross-Council event.
  • Make recommendations on Council involvement in the event.

A draft Terms of Reference has been developed and the new Technical Committee will consider this at its next meeting on 7 February 2013.
