RIVERS TO REEF CLIMATE ALLIANCE

Update by:  Michelle O'Loughlin, Rivers to Reef Climate Resilient Alliance Coordinator

Co-designed by Cairns, Mareeba, Tablelands and Yarrabah councils, this pilot Alliance aims to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, develop opportunities in the low carbon economy and build resilience to climate risks. The Alliance will work collaboratively to leverage and scale up successful existing programs, implement new initiatives and reduce duplication of effort and costs.  Facilitated by FNQROC as part of the Queensland Climate Resilient Councils program (LGAQ), its coordination is funded by the Queensland Government and builds on the considerable leadership and expertise within these councils. Read more

Since August, the Steering Group has developed the model, Terms of Reference, engagement plan, project opportunities and prioritised actions into a draft action plan. We’ve delivered workshops with councillors, with more to come, and look forward to them shaping the Alliance as members of its Executive.

Local government-led climate alliances represent 125 councils nationally and have been in place for over two decades in Victoria, delivering steep emissions reductions and cost savings to their members. This pilot is one of five starting this year and is an opportunity for Far North Queensland to showcase how it manages climate risks to safeguard effective and efficient local governments into the future.

Officers will be kept updated on the Alliance through relevant FNQROC Technical Committees and a briefing to the Board in December. For more information, contact email/m.oloughlin)(fnqroc.qld.gov.au
