FNQROC Regional Sustainability Group - September 2012

These issues are being looked at by various authorities and State Government and hopefully we will be able to get on with the job soon.  The Sustainability Group endorsed FNQROC to continue communicating with State Government and other peak bodies to urge the State Government to quickly drive the necessary changes and reforms to ensure the earliest opportunity for councils in our region to implement street light retrofit programs.

Meanwhile Ergon has informed us that the field work has been completed on the regional inventory of street lights and reports are being delivered shortly.  This audit will provide a detailed list of lights in each Council area and will be critical in designing retrofits and will also assist with future service agreements.

Olympics may have finished but our region is still going for gold

The FNQ Region is “ahead of the pack” - with planning for the Reef Guardians program, according to Phil Laycock from GBRMPA.  Phil also reported that Karen Vohland - Reef Guardian Program Director, has been visiting Councils in the region and was pleased with the support being shown for Reef Guardians.  For more information on Reef Guardians visit its website

Our region also got a mention as reported by Steve McDermott of Terrain NRM.  Apparently the ‘Reef Rescue’ program has received more than 450 grant applications in Terrain’s area.  This is a pleasing result showing locals are keen to be a part of protecting our natural environment.  For more information on Reef Rescue visit its website
