Planning

The Planners within the region are working to share their knowledge and expertise in:

  • Interpretation of legislation and state planning policies,
  • Content development for planning schemes, and
  • Resolving issues with the implementation of FNQ2031

The regional goal is to position the region so it can be offered the same opportunities for involvement in the development of guidelines, policies and legislation which is available to SEQ councils.

Training opportunities for the region's Planners

The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) conducted two training sessions for the region's Planners this month. The first was a full day on the recently enacted Queensland Coastal Plan. Half the day was dedicated to explaining how the Coastal Plan provisions can be appropriately integrated into new SPA Planning Schemes. The rest of the day related to the interpretation of the Coastal Plan through the development assessment process.

The second training session was a half day on the new Strategic Cropping Land (SCL) policy framework, incorporating the SCL Act and State Planning Policy. The aim of the session was mainly to assist the region's Planners to implement SPP 1/12 and the new referral triggers. The briefing provided an overview of the SPP, guidance on how to reflect the SPP in Local Government planning schemes when they are made or amended, and, advice on how to identify when a development application needs to be referred to DERM.

Fortunately, we managed to ensure these training sessions were held on consecutive days, thus enabling representation from all the region's councils. We were particularly pleased the Department chose to provide these sessions for the FNQ region - an indication that they are taking our concerns about receiving equal representation as SEQ seriously.
